Changes in traditional SAT to digital SAT

The SAT, an essential standardized test for college admission, is undergoing a revolutionary transition from a traditional pencil-and-paper format to a digital platform starting in spring 2023 for international students and March 2024 for U.S. students. This transformation, one of the most dramatic in the SAT’s 97-year history, aims to reduce test-related stress and increase exam equity. It’s important to note a crucial change in the test-taking process during this transition – the test will now be taken on approved digital devices with the College Board’s custom testing app, Bluebook, which students will need to download.

Exploring the new SAT Digital format

The digital SAT uses an adaptive format, meaning the difficulty of the questions is adjusted based on the test taker’s previous answers. It will consist of two main sections – Reading and Writing, and Math, each divided into two modules. In the adaptive format, Module 2’s difficulty depends on the student’s performance in Module 1. Despite its adaptive nature, students can navigate freely within the current module, although moving on to the next or returning to the previous one will not be possible.

How long is the new SAT and how doe scoring work?

The duration of the SAT is set to decrease from the current three-hour duration to approximately two hours and 14 minutes, thanks to a drop in sections and the adaptive format. Despite the changes in format and duration, the scoring system will remain the same. The digital SAT will be calculated on a 1600-point scale, with scores from both Reading and Writing, and Math sections combined to provide the total score.

Different sections in the new digital SAT

The digital SAT will continue to test the same skills as the traditional format. It will include sections on Reading and Writing and Math. However, the novelty lies in the digitally adaptive test design that adjusts the questions in the second module based on student performance in the first module. This enables the exam to be more accurate and tailored to individual needs.

The shift towards a digital SAT opens up unprecedented flexibility in terms of where and when students can take the test. Being not confined to a specific location or time zone, students can take the digital SAT from various locations as long as they have a reliable internet connection and a device that supports the Bluebook App. This flexibility can help reduce stress associated with travelling and adjusting to unfamiliar test centres. Digital tests also allow for more testing dates throughout the year, rather than just a few fixed dates, providing students with more options to choose a date that suits their preparation timeline and schedule.

SAT Accessibility Features

Transitioning to digital SAT expands the accessibility features for students who require special accommodations. The digital format integrates a variety of built-in accessibility tools that can deliver a more personalized testing experience for all students. These features can include text-to-speech, adjustable text size, colour overlays, and extended time, among others. Furthermore, the technology behind the new format reduces the need for separate testing accommodations, hence facilitating a streamlined testing process.

Immediate SAT Scoring

One major advantage of the digital SAT is the capability of providing immediate scoring for students. Traditional paper-based tests may take weeks to be scored and released, leaving students in a state of uncertainty for an extended period. In contrast, the digital version can provide scores within days. This immediate scoring system allows students to promptly identify their strengths and areas for improvement, and adjust their preparation strategies if necessary. It can also facilitate more timely decision-making when it comes to college applications.

Enhanced Security in SAT Scoring

Enhanced security is another crucial advantage that the digital format brings. Each student receives a unique digital form, minimizing the risk of score cancellation due to possible cheating or test privacy breaches. Moreover, digital tests can enforce strict control over time limits and can detect any unusual activities during the test-taking process. This level of security ensures fairness and integrity in SAT testing, reinforcing its credibility and reliability as a measure of students’ readiness for college-level work.

Getting Acquainted With Online Testing

The transition from traditional, paper-based testing to online formats can be a significant change for many students. The new digital SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test), slated to commence from Spring 2023 for international students and by Spring 2024 for all US students, will be an electronically delivered test that students will take using approved digital devices. Adapting to online testing environments will undoubtedly require some getting used to, but with adequate preparation, students can familiarize themselves and excel in these new modalities.

The new digital SAT will be delivered through the College Board’s custom testing app, Bluebook. Through Bluebook, students can access full-length adaptive digital SAT practice tests and get post-practice-test feedback. The ability to review scores and find detailed explanations for their responses enables students to identify and work on their areas of weakness.

Getting well-acquainted with the Bluebook app will greatly facilitate the transition to digital testing as it is the primary tool for digital SAT administration. The app also provides a myriad of other features like a timer, a function to flag questions, and highlighting, which are all useful for effective test navigation. Therefore, regular exploration and usage of this tool is a critical step in adjusting to online testing.

Strengthening Academic Skills

Scoring well on the new digital SAT requires a strong foundation in academic skills. This encompasses nurturing proficiency in key areas like reading, mathematics, and writing. As recommended by the College Board, undertaking rigorous academic work in high school is one of the pillars of good SAT preparation. Daily homework and classroom assignments can serve as valuable practice, equipping students for the academic rigors of the SAT.

Participation in PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), PSAT 10, and PSAT 8/9 are also highly recommended as they can significantly contribute to solidifying the necessary academic competence.

Additionally, to bolster their academic prowess, students can leverage high-quality skill and knowledge-building activities available through the A+ Program.

Time Management Strategies

One of the crucial areas to concentrate on is effective time management. The digital SAT, although shorter than its traditional counterpart with a duration of approximately two hours and 14 minutes, still demands efficient time utilization. The adaptive format of the test adds an extra layer of complexity, requiring students to adjust their pacing based on the difficulty of the questions.

An excellent way to hone time management skills is through regular practice with timed tests. The Bluebook app offers official SAT practice tests, providing an accurate simulation of the test environment. By regularly taking these practice tests, students can measure how long they typically spend on each question or section, helping them devise an effective time management strategy tailored to their pace and understanding levels.

However, mastering time management isn’t just about rushing through questions. It involves understanding when to spend extra time on a challenging question and when to move on. As such, developing an intuitive understanding of one’s strengths and weaknesses is equally vital.

For many students, the switch to a digital SAT can initially seem daunting. However, the essence of the test remains the same. It continues to assess students on the fundamentals of Math, Reading, and Writing, maintaining the same scoring scale. What changes is the mode of examination, which becomes adaptive to each student’s performance and the total questions reduces to 98 from the previous 154, making the test more targeted.

This transition mirrors the digital revolution happening in the world, where students already engage in online learning, completing assignments on digital platforms and submitting them electronically. In alignment with this trend, it’s essential to view this change as an opportunity to improve skills such as typing, navigating online systems and enhancing digital literacy, which are valuable in this digital age.

The introduction of adaptive testing, which adjusts the difficulty level based on a student’s previous answers, might seem challenging. However, with the right preparation and practice using Bluebook, which simulates this adaptive testing approach, students can become comfortable with this format.

What to do in case of technical glitches?

In the event of technical glitches, it’s important to stay calm and inform the test proctor immediately. The College Board has protocols and contingency plans in place to tackle such issues. The digital SAT platform, Bluebook, is designed to withstand common technical issues such as temporary internet disconnections. In most cases, the application will save the student’s progress, allowing them to continue where they left off once the issue is resolved.

Can I retake the digital SAT?

Yes, students have the opportunity to retake the digital SAT if they aren’t satisfied with their scores. It’s advised, however, to take the time to adequately prepare before each attempt. Use resources like our Digital SAT Prep classes and the Official Digital SAT Study Guide™ to strengthen academic skills and familiarize yourself with the digital format.

Testimonials

"I was enrolled in another program in which there were only children who were very advanced. The instructors did not know how to teach students who were performing at their regular grade level, and it was a waste of time. The teachers at ASC are always very prepared, they explain things clearly, and the homework aligns with the lessons."
