How One-On-One Tutoring Helps Students Excel Academically

Sometimes, nothing helps a student succeed like good old fashioned one-on-one tutoring.

With classroom sizes growing in so many districts, without enough teachers being hired to match, it’s often difficult for a student to get the help they need when they’re struggling with a subject. Teachers are compelled by test schedules to push the class ahead, and those being left behind sometimes lack good resources to catch up.  In other cases, a B student may aspire to A’s, but just needs a little extra help to get over the hump.

Either way, one on one tutoring can be an excellent alternative, bringing long-lasting benefits to the student:

The Many Benefits of One-On-One Tutoring

Personalized Attention

Even a seemingly-minor misunderstanding can often lead to major difficulties learning a subject. However, in a busy classroom, few teachers have the time to “drill down” and discover exactly why a student is having trouble grasping a concept. With one-on-one attention, there’s plenty of opportunity to discover where exactly a student is stumbling, and help them through it.

Less Embarrassment

Proponents of group-based study tend to point at the social aspects of learning, but there’s a downside to such study groups: Very often, underperforming students are embarrassed to be seen failing in front of their peers. With private tutoring, it’s just the student and their mentor, without a room full of eyes watching them.

Customized Pacing

Personal tutoring sessions can move as quickly or as slowly as the student needs. It’s entirely outside the pressures faced by regular schools to cover a certain amount of material according to a standard schedule. A tutor never needs to “move on” from a certain topic until their student has fully mastered it.

Direct Positive Feedback

Another tool often lacking in large classroom environments is the proper feedback needed to nurture a struggling student. It’s all too easy for teachers to focus on correcting mistakes to the point they forget to praise success. One-on-one tutoring leaves ample room for feedback, from a mentor who knows the student well enough to know when they deserve -and need- a hearty pat on the back.  In turn, this encourages even greater success in the future.

The A Plus Program has nearly a quarter century experience in successfully tutoring students and preparing them for greatness.  One-on-one tutoring is available for practically every subject a student might need help in, from basic reading or mathematics to advanced AP subjects.
